I was recent...I'd say its ignorance top to bottom. I was recently amusing myself with the idea that I have never heard anyone, anywhere, refer to "The Persian Street". We hear a lot about "The Arab Street". But apparently the Persians, by way of Americas perception that "They're all the same over there", are not entitled to their own street.<br /><br />This little Suni/Shia matter you bring up is what leads A certain radio personality to call the invasion of Iraq "The Military Blunder of the Century". The thesis being that the real threat is Iran, and that Iraq, by suppressing its Shia population, prevented the Shia from forming a more formidible "greater Persia".
